“I don’t want to be spending my time on the phone getting prior authorizations. I want to be talking to my patients and taking care of them.”
This quote was the opening sentence of a recent article in Medical Economics that clearly articulates one of the primary reasons physicians contact us here at Specialdocs. Whether it be frustration over the lack of time available for each patient, the changing economic climate or concerns regarding the effects of the Affordable Care Act, their frustration leads them to explore alternative practice models.
Physicians tell us repeatedly, as stated in the article, that they did not become a physician to practice “hamster-wheel” medicine – yet they are caught in a system today where speed and technology are rewarded, not caring and compassion. The physician-patient relationship, now threatened, is what is of paramount importance …and that medical outcomes are enhanced by having the time to listen.
While we do not know if the doctor–patient relationship can survive in a traditional internal medicine practice, we are certain that the relationship is thriving when a physician transitions to a concierge medicine model.
