A Long Road Ahead for Digital Communication Adoption

Highlighted in previous posts, digital communication is being integrated into the healthcare industry. However, adoption is slow – the majority of U.S. physicians do not use emails or texts messages to communicate with patients, as cited in a recent Nielsen survey.

According to an article in The Health Care Blog, several obstacles possibly related to physicians’ nonparticipation are not easily solved. For instance, the introduction of new technologies can overwhelm physicians’ workloads and the delicate balance between engaging patients online while still protecting their privacy can be difficult to maintain.

Despite likely challenges, as more medical professionals, including concierge medicine physicians, adopt digital communication channels, their increased market size ideally should prompt the IT sector to provide digital tools that can be incorporated into physicians’ daily routines without compromising patient privacy or incurring excessive expense.
