What We’re Reading: More Changes Ahead for Healthcare

The U.S. healthcare industry continues to experience significant shifts, impacting physicians and their patients. Most notable is the ongoing decrease in the number of private medical practices, increased regulations that require more screen time and the rise of healthcare consumerism.

Seismic Shifts in Healthcare

Becker’s Hospital Review recently shared a report from PwC’s Health Research Institute titled, “5 Forces Reshaping US Healthcare.” These include consumerism’s rise, decentralization of care, a shift from volume to value, and a pronounced surge in interest in wellness. Read the full list here.

The Decline of the Traditional Private Practice

A recent article by Fierce Healthcare, revealed that almost half of independent physicians are likely to sell their practice in the next 10 years, although 73 percent would prefer to remain independent. The majority of respondents expressed interest in exploring new, innovative practice models to sustain their independence.

Less Time, More Stress

The Physicians Foundation 2016 Survey of America’s Physicians Practice Patterns & Perspectives analyzed responses from 17,236 physicians on the state of the medical profession and its future impact. Among the findings:

  • Physicians are frustrated: 49% often or always experience feelings of burnout and only 37% have positive feelings about the future of the medical profession.
  • Physicians need more time: Only 14% have the time they need to provide the highest standards of care and 80% are overextended or at capacity, with no time to see additional patients.
  • Physicians are seeking change: 48% of physicians plan to cut back on hours, retire, take a non-clinical job, switch to concierge medicine, or take other steps
