Independence, Reclaimed: Why More Physicians Are Choosing a Different Path

Is the era of independent medical practice quietly slipping away, vanishing like house calls, paper charts, and the corner drugstore? The numbers paint a sobering picture: more than 77% of physicians are now employed by hospitals, health systems, large group practices, or insurance companies. For doctors under 40, that figure climbs to 85%.

And yet, despite the promises of efficiency, support, and security, many employed physicians find themselves more burdened than ever. They’re drowning in administrative tasks, facing growing patient dissatisfaction, and experiencing burnout at alarming rates.

In sharp counterpoint, a growing community of physicians has found a way back to the roots of their inspiration for becoming doctors. With a change to concierge medicine, they have reclaimed the right to practice their way – to care deeply, think holistically, and build enduring patient relationships.
This Independence Day, we’re honored to share reflections from our Specialdocs community – dedicated doctors who have rediscovered the joy of medicine through an innovative practice model that elevates individual purpose, long-term sustainability and exceptional patient care.

Freedom to Practice the Way You Always Envisioned

Dr. Keith Chumley had reached a breaking point. Two decades into his career, he no longer recognized the calling that once impassioned him. Launching his concierge practice in Southern California changed everything.

“I’m gratified to be available when patients need me, to take time to research their conditions, collaborate with colleagues, coordinate care, and focus on prevention—all of which makes a real difference in long-term health. I advise other doctors to think about how—not if—you’re going to transition to concierge medicine. The sooner you jump, the sooner you can practice the way you want, for the rest of your career.”

Freedom from an Unworkable System

For Dr. Michael Ford, practicing medicine felt like pushing a boulder uphill, endlessly. Twelve years in a high-volume health system left him exhausted and disillusioned.

It was completely unworkable. I knew I couldn’t continue this way.

In 2023, he partnered with Specialdocs to open his concierge practice—and restored his values.

“What patients appreciate most is simply being able to get care when they need it. I don’t promise flashy extras, just the finest medicine I can offer. I now look forward to every day and the discovery that comes with each patient visit.”
His advice to peers: “Get enough experience to know you’re a good doctor, and then don’t wait. Find a partner like Specialdocs who respects your autonomy and will help you build the practice of your dreams.”

Freedom from the grind

For Dr. Marc Harrigan, the change to concierge medicine was deeply meaningful. ”Every year, my hospital increased volume requirements and decreased pay. It became all about RVUs and time slots,” he remembers. “Now, every patient encounter reminds me why I chose medicine in the first place. My only regret? Not doing this sooner.”

Freedom from a broken model

Dr. Brian Bilchik has long believed the current healthcare system is actually a sick-care system. “Concierge medicine is the only model that prioritizes prevention and relationships. We feel incredibly fortunate to be independent.”

Freedom from burnout

Dr. Bradley Adler feels the difference in his concierge practice daily. “I look forward to my day now, and know I’m making a bigger impact than ever.” He advises: “If you’re feeling trapped or burned out, consider this path. You deserve time to connect with patients, to be present with family, to give back to the world.”

Freedom to balance your life

For Dr. Denise Armellini, the pivotal moment came when she was unable to attend a school function and her son said, ‘Mommy, I think you like your patients better than us.’ She says: “That was it. Within three months, I made the switch to concierge medicine. Now I have time for my family, my patients, and myself. I’ll never go back.”

Your Career, Your Choice

As we celebrate Fourth of July 2025, remember: you still have an opportunity to restore your independence, redefine your career, and realize the rewards of a healthy work-life balance.
As a wise, albeit fictional, doctor once said: “You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go.” — Dr. Seuss
